Understanding the Marangu Route
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the greatest adventures in Africa. This 5-day Marangu Route itinerary is perfect for trekkers looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience with comfortable hut accommodation instead of camping.
Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is the only trail on Kilimanjaro that offers mountain huts along the way, making it a popular choice for climbers who prefer more comfort during their trek.
During this incredible journey you will hike through several ecological zones of Kilimanjaro National Park, from lush rainforest to alpine desert landscapes, before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa.
With the support of experienced mountain guides, porters, and cooks, this adventure offers both challenge and reward, culminating in breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa.
Day by day itinerary
Day 1 – Arusha to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, drive from Arusha to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. After registration, begin the trek accompanied by an armed park ranger. Along the trail, you may see zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and monkeys. The hike passes through beautiful montane forest before reaching Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Day 2 – Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
After breakfast, continue trekking through forest and heather zones toward Saddle Hut located between Little Meru and the main summit.
In the afternoon, you may take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) for spectacular views.
Elevation: 2,514 m → 3,570 m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Heather and Moorland
Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.
Day 3 – Saddle Hut to Summit (Socialist Peak) to Miriakamba Hut
Wake up around 1:30 AM for the summit attempt. The trail climbs steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and Cobra Point (4,350 m) before reaching Socialist Peak (4,566 m) at sunrise. From the summit, enjoy incredible views of the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Saddle Hut for a short rest and brunch, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut.

Distance: 5 km up / 13 km down

Habitat: Alpine Desert & Moorland
Day 4 – Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Arusha
After breakfast, descend through open grassland and forest back to Momella Gate. Wildlife sightings are common along the trail. A vehicle will be waiting at the gate to transfer you back to Arusha.
