Understanding the Marangu Route

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is the only trail on Kilimanjaro that offers mountain huts along the way, making it a popular choice for climbers who prefer more comfort during their trek.
During this incredible journey you will hike through several ecological zones of Kilimanjaro National Park, from lush rainforest to alpine desert landscapes, before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa.

Day by day itinerary
Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your adventure begins after breakfast with a short drive from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, the main entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing park registration, you will start your trek through the dense tropical rainforest that covers the lower slopes of the mountain. This section of the trail is rich in wildlife and vegetation. You may spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of colorful birds along the way. After a steady climb through the forest, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop on the mountain. In the afternoon you can take a short optional walk to Maundi Crater for beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Today the trail leaves the forest and enters the open heath and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically as you gain altitude, with giant heathers and unique alpine plants covering the slopes. As you continue climbing, the stunning peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi become clearly visible. After several hours of trekking, you reach Horombo Hut, located at 3,700 meters. From here you can enjoy spectacular views across the vast plains below, including the beautiful Maasai steppe stretching toward the horizon.

Day 3 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The trek continues across a dramatic alpine landscape known as The Saddle, a broad plateau connecting the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. This part of the mountain has very little vegetation, creating a striking high-altitude desert environment. Along the way you will pass the Last Water Point, the final natural water source before reaching Kibo Hut. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters.

Day 4 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb. Around midnight you begin the final ascent toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is slow and steady as you make your way up the steep slopes under the stars. After several hours you reach Gillman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa. From there, the trail continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point on the African continent.

Day 5 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After breakfast you begin the final descent through moorland and back into the lush rainforest zone. The trail leads past Mandara Hut before reaching Marangu Gate, where you will officially complete your Kilimanjaro climb. At the gate you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate before returning to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate your incredible achievement.
