Mikumi National Park covers approximately 3,230 square kilometers and is the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania. The park forms part of the vast Selous ecosystem, which supports an incredible diversity of wildlife and natural habitats. Its landscape consists of wide open grasslands, acacia woodlands, rolling hills, seasonal floodplains, and scattered baobab trees that create classic African safari scenery.

The Mkata Floodplain is the most famous wildlife viewing area within the park and serves as the center of most game viewing activities. This expansive plain attracts large concentrations of animals throughout the year and provides excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. The park is particularly known for its large populations of elephants and buffaloes that roam freely across the plains and woodlands.

Lions are frequently seen in Mikumi and are famous for resting in the shade of acacia trees or surveying the grasslands from termite mounds. Leopards are present but more elusive, while spotted hyenas are commonly observed during early morning and evening game drives.

One of the unique attractions of Mikumi National Park is its impressive birdlife. With over 400 recorded bird species, the park is a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors may spot lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-throated longclaws, bateleurs, fish eagles, hornbills, secretary birds, kingfishers, and numerous migratory species around wetlands and river systems.

Hippo pools located within the park offer excellent opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds up close. These pools become particularly active during the dry season when animals gather around permanent water sources.

The surrounding mountain ranges and beautiful sunsets add to the park’s scenic charm, making Mikumi an excellent destination for photography and nature lovers. The park’s peaceful environment and relatively low tourist traffic provide a more relaxed safari experience compared to some of Tanzania’s northern parks.

Mikumi National Park can easily be combined with nearby destinations such as Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), and Udzungwa Mountains National Park, making it an important part of southern Tanzania safari itineraries.
